Background Info

“TRIBOLOGY AND PRECISION MACHINING” RESEARCH GROUP IS DESIGNED AND ORGANIZED TO RESEARCH FUNDAMENTALS OF TRIBOLOGICAL PHENOMENA AND SUPPORT RELATED INDUSTRIES THROUGH RESEARCH ACTIVITIES AND CULTIVATING STUDENTS AND GROUP MEMBERS. “TRIBOLOGY AND PRECISION MACHINING” WILL COLLABORATE WITH OTHER RESEARCH GROUPS AND ANY R&D ORGANIZATIONS TO GENERATE SYNERGISTIC EFFECTS: FRETTING WEAR (SMALL RECIPROCATING SLIDING WEAR) ISSUE WITH “CONDITIONING MONITORING”, ATMOSPHERIC GAS ISSUES WITH I2CNER (INTERNATIONAL INSTITUTE OF CARBON NEUTRAL ENERGY RESEARCH) IN KYUSHU UNIVERSITY, VEGETABLE OIL AS ENVIRONMENT FRIENDLY LUBRICANT WITH SOME CHEMICAL RESEARCH GROUPS, ENERGY SAVING AND INNOVATE POWER GENERATION TECHNOLOGY THROUGH TRIBOLOGICAL BREAKTHROUGHS WITH COMING RESEARCH GROUPS IN EGT (ENVIRONMENT AND GREEN TECHNOLOGY DIVISION, MJIIT), ADVANCED SEMICONDUCTOR DEVELOPMENT BY IMPROVING CMP (CHEMICAL MECHANICAL PLANARIZATION), ETC.THE TERM “TRIBOLOGY” WAS COINED IN THE UK IN 1966 AND DEfiNED AS “THE SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING OF INTERACTING SURFACES IN RELATIVE MOTION. IT INCLUDES THE STUDY AND APPLICATION OF THE PRINCIPLES OF FRICTION, LUBRICATION AND WEAR.” TRIBOLOGY TENDS TO BE REGARDED AS A CONSERVATIVE TECHNOLOGY TO SAVE ENERGY BY REDUCING FRICTION FORCE AND TO IMPROVE DURABILITY OF MACHINES BY REDUCING WEAR (ATTRITION, GALL, ABRASION ETC.) IN FACT, A SURVEY DONE IN JAPAN IN L980’S RESULTED THAT COSTS EQUIVALENT TO AROUND 3% OF GDP COULD BE SAVED BY TRIBOLOGICAL IMPROVEMENT IN INDUSTRIES. MEANWHILE TRIBOLOGY ALSO HAS PROGRESSIVE FEATURES AS A KEY TECHNOLOGY TO MATERIALIZE INNOVATIVE PRODUCTS SUCH AS VLSI, HDD, ARTIfiCIAL SATELLITE, ARTIfiCIAL JOINT, BULLET TRAIN (SHINKANSEN), ETC. THE FEATURES OF TRIBOLOGY DESCRIBED ABOVE SUGGEST THAT R&D IN TRIBOLOGY fiELD WILL BE PROfiTABLE NOT ONLY FOR MECHANICAL INDUSTRIES BUT ALSO FOR SOLVING PROBLEMS IN ENERGY ISSUES, ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES, AND TECHNICAL INNOVATIONS.
